I hit upon the idea of making a donation to the organisation equivalent
to the cost of a new copy of _Manon des Sources_, this quarter's movie,
buy it (wearing my Buff hat), rip it, format-shifting being legal
"here", and upload it. Is it OK for other members to grab it, for it is
the organisation's property?
No, and this is where it's a poor example, really. You have
purchased the physical property, not the intellectual property.
Making copies and redistributing it is where its now changed form, and
you've duplicated it to make something new.
If not, perhaps each member can Paypal an annual sub to a kitty, we
elect a treasurer, and he buys the DVDs to form the organisation's
library? Are we formal enough yet?
That'd work. They exist, it's called a library. :-) But you're
still limited to the physical form. This is why Netflix can let you
have a DVD, but cannot stream the digital version over the web.
Eventually, overcome by membership explosion, we register as a company,
a legal entity under a country's laws, with each member holding their
share. (I think _Professional Contractors Group_ in the UK may have
had/have this structure.) Is it now OK?
Sure, just like Netflix. But it's still a one per copy issue. :-)
And you just created a mail order library.
